Summary:
Culverts play a crucial role for roads and railways by facilitating drainage across the structures. However, in cold climates with seasonally frozen ground, frost-related damages around culverts are a common challenge. Culverts alter the thermal conditions of the embankment by allowing cold air to flow through the structure, leading to deeper frost penetration compared to adjacent areas. The thesis presents field studies of thermal conditions in culverts in relation to ambient air temperatures and wind speed and direction. Numerical modelling is presented in order to get a general relationship and importance of culvert diameter. Impact of snow in ditches is analyzed. Recommendations regarding temperatures in culverts for frost penetration calculations are given.
